Fight Colorectal Cancer
Alexandria, Va.-based Fight Colorectal Cancer relocated its headquarters to Springfield, opening to the public Sept. 8. The nonprofit leases 2,000 square feet at the downtown Woolworth building, 134 Park Central Square, Ste. 210, for an initial three years from Tillman Redevelopment LLC for undisclosed terms. Citing the lower cost of living in the Springfield area, spokeswoman Danielle Burgess said Fight CRC would cut expenses by 50 percent with the move. Also, Anjee Davis, the organization’s president and a Springfield native, recently moved back to the Queen City. Burgess, who works out of Kansas City, said the organization has nearly 25,000 volunteers, including several thousand regularly involved in policy efforts. During 2015, the organization had 120 meetings with congressional offices from 30 states, a 20 percent increase from 2014, and volunteers sent thousands of emails supporting bills on cancer research and screening processes.

Gettin’ Basted LLC
Jason Roberts, Derrick Melugin and Brad Leighninger started a barbecue food truck Sept. 17 organized as Gettin’ Basted LLC. Operating at 836 N. Glenstone Ave. in the SGF Mobile Food Park, Gettin’ Basted sells ribs, brisket and sandwiches for around $10 apiece. The business partners became involved in competition barbecue in 2012, and they’ve collected over 40 championships, including the 2015 Kansas City BBQ Society’s Team of the Year in chicken. They invested around $30,000 in the 8-by-20-foot food truck. Roberts and Melugini, Gettin’ Basted’s only full-time employees, have two decades of combined experience in the food business, including stints at Ruby Tuesday and Florentina’s Ristorante Italiano in Branson. Leighninger, the head pit master, has worked the barbecue circuit for nearly five years. The team also offers catering with an average cost of $12 per pound of meat.

Sycamore Creek Family Ranch Inc. launched May 21 as a destination for weddings, festivals and private events, such as family reunions. Owners Mike and Lisa Button purchased the 245-acre property at 2657 Sunset Inn Road near Rockaway Beach for an undisclosed amount in May 2015. With a mission statement to transform culture by strengthening families, their business model blends the concepts of agritourism and ministry.
