Bon Bon’s Candy House
Candy House changed its name Sept. 23 to Bon Bon’s Candy House, about 18 months after owners Adam and Bonnie Nolen purchased the store from Bonnie’s parents and founders, Terry and Pat Hicklin. Bonnie Nolen said the name change is part of their business plan to localize operations, which previously were based in Joplin, and as a play on words for Bonnie’s name and a new bonbon line of chocolates. At the Park Crest Center store, 3825 S. Campbell Ave., the bonbons retail for $2.95 apiece. Bon Bon’s Candy House also offers candy-making classes – in such themes as American Girl and Star Wars – for $15-$18 per person and birthday parties starting at $200 for 10 guests, according to its website. The store employs eight.

Zaxby’s
Jeff Hebble and Jason Pullman opened the area’s first Zaxby’s restaurant Sept. 5 at 3220 E. Sunshine St. While it’s Hebble’s first time in the restaurant business, Pullman has worked in food service for 25 years, previously as a Subway franchisee and currently operating the two Firehouse Subs in Springfield. Zaxby’s specializes in fried chicken, boneless wings and sandwiches for an average cost of about $8. Athens, Ga.-based Zaxby’s Franchising LLC requires franchisee net worth of at least $1 million, with liquid assets greater than $500,000, according to its website. Opening fees range from $352,000 to $664,300. With rights in Greene County, Hebble said the business partners plan to open five Zaxby’s stores in the next four years. The restaurant is around 3,800 square feet with a seating capacity of 90. The store employs about 50. Hebble and Pullman contracted with Larry Snyder and Co. to build the store for $560,000, according to a city building permit, on the site of a former lumberyard. Organized under Z5 Properties LLC, the business partners purchased the 1.7-acre site in April 2015 for $990,000.

Domino’s Pizza
Domino’s Pizza franchisees Art Hurteau and Marty Prather on June 26 moved their Nixa store to a larger building at 411 Northview Road. With relocation costs approaching $350,000, the franchisees moved from 1,200 square feet leased at 690 W. Mount Vernon St. into 3,000 square feet they own under their franchise company, A & M Pizza Inc. Hurteau said the restaurant seats up to 35 and includes a pickup window. It was remodeled in the Domino’s “theater image,” which Hurteau said is the chain’s new corporate mandate to promote transparency in how they make pizza by putting the whole process on “stage” for customers to observe. Hurteau said the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Domino’s franchise company charges a weekly 11.5 percent national advertising and royalty fee. Franchisees since 1981, Hurteau and Prather own the rights to the greater Springfield area and operate 12 stores in the region. They are preparing to open a store in Arkansas.
