MSU staff recommends board approval on $26M Glass Hall bid

Posted online
Missouri State University officials are recommending the board of governors approve a $26 million bid submitted by DeWitt & Associates Inc. for a Glass Hall renovation and addition project.

The Springfield general contractor entered the lowest bid for the project, which would include renovating the on-campus academic building’s existing public spaces to appear more modern and constructing a 40,000-square-foot addition, according to the board’s Oct. 16 agenda.

The addition would be a Student Success Center for the MSU College of Business, as well as a new, primary entrance to the building and an automatic fire suppression system.

According to the agenda, the business college contains nearly a quarter of MSU’s entire enrollment. The construction project would allow the school to continually market to those students. Glass Hall was built in 1987.

Beyond the base bid, MSU officials recommend six options that would add additional work for DeWitt. The project’s total budget is $33.8 million. Financing would come through MSU Foundation and College of Business donations and reserve funds.

The recommended options are:
    •    infill work for the executive Master of Business Administration offices, including finishes and mechanical and electrical work, which is budgeted to cost $245,000;
    •    demolition of the existing second-floor classrooms and renovation of offices on that floor at Glass Hall, as well as a new perimeter wall, $223,000;
    •    site work and landscaping, $292,000;
    •    conversion of a closed parking lot into a natural turf area with a sidewalk, $111,000;
    •    a new cooling tower to replace the building’s original structure, $179,000; and
    •    the addition of energy-efficient LED light fixtures, $84,000.

DeWitt also served as general contractor for the recently completed O’Reilly Clinical Health Sciences Center at Cherry Street and Holland Avenue. Officials ceremonially dedicated the roughly $14.1 million building on Oct. 6, according to a news release.
