Hospice Foundation of the Ozarks to award $600K

Posted online

Hospice Foundation of the Ozarks Inc. on Dec. 3 will award $600,000 in funding to 12 area nonprofits providing end-of-life care and services as part of the organization’s annual grant distribution.

Executive Director Kathy Sims said the grant funds and number of applicants are up this year – from five nonprofits that received $200,000 in 2014 – because Hospice Foundation has been saving toward a bigger allotment for nearly four years.

“We have been putting money in a reserve account for some large projects and felt like this would be a good way to make a bigger impact on end-of-life care,” said Sims, declining to disclose the names of this year’s recipients until Thursday’s 2 p.m. announcement at Twin Oaks Country Club.

Founded in 1997, Hospice Foundation of the Ozarks’ grants are funded through contributor donations and planned gifts.

Sims said last year a $25,000 grant helped to expand child counseling services at the Lost and Found Grief Center. Other programs funded last year were the establishment of the Transportable Physician Orders and Patient Preferences Program at CoxHealth, and development of End of Life Education for the Nurse Assistant curriculum with Missouri Hospice and Palliative Care Association – a program geared toward additional training and education for nurse assistants.

“Those are typically the people who are hands-on caregivers, but their general training does not provide specifically for end-of-life care,” Sims said, adding grants also funded the establishment of music therapy programs in area hospice agencies.
