Greene County businesses eligible for disaster assistance

Gov. Jay Nixon announced over the weekend that small, nonfarm businesses in 112 Missouri counties, including Greene, are eligible for low-interest federal disaster loans.

Via the U.S. Small Business Administration, businesses can apply for loans to offset economic losses caused by excessive rainfall and flooding starting March 1, according to a news release.

“The significant weather-related losses suffered by farmers this year had a harmful impact on many small businesses as well,” Nixon said in the release.

In Greene County, a record 22-foot flooding of James River in June caused hundreds of thousands of dollars of damages to area businesses.

Rivercut Golf Course took on as much as $130,000 in costs, while such businesses as Carson’s Nursery, Turners Station and CySports Center reported $175,000 in damages, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

Greene County neighbors Polk, Dallas, Webster and Christian counties also are eligible for small-business loans, according to the release.
