Former bank employee sentenced for $130K theft scheme

Posted online
An Aurora woman was sentenced yesterday for embezzling $130,000 from her former employer, Community National Bank.

Jo Ann Nickell, 46, received a sentence of 18 months in federal prison without parole and a restitution order of $130,268 to the bank and its insurance company. Nickell is required to self-surrender Oct. 3 to serve her sentence, according to a news release from the office of Tammy Dickinson, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

A former customer service representative and backup teller for Community National Bank in Aurora, Nickell pleaded guilty in October to three years of embezzling from her employer.

During the scheme, Nickell stole money from the accounts of seven victims, ranging in age from 65 to 91. Some of the victims were cancer and early dementia patients, and one was in a nursing home. Individual thefts were as high as $14,400, according to the release.

To conceal the thefts, Nickell directed some statements to her at the bank rather than being mailed to the appropriate customers.

Her crime was discovered when she stole $8,000 from the savings account of an 87-year-old customer, who noticed the withdrawal and notified the bank, according to the release.

Community National Bank, which paid back all of the victims of Nickell’s embezzlement scheme, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. lost a total of $130,268.
