The longtime owner of Skateport, a former roller rink demolished to make way for a new four-way stop on South Glenstone Avenue, was the first customer yesterday when Andy’s Frozen Custard opened its doors at the intersection.
Ted Hall operated Skateport for 37 years before closing it in mid-2014 when highway officials extended the road to create the intersection. In January last year, he sold 1.5 acres at 3830 S. Glenstone Ave. to Andy’s.
Located on the southeast corner of the intersection, the store is the sixth Andy’s in Springfield and its 38th companywide, according to a news release.
Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. served as general contractor for the project designed by Esterly Schneider & Associates Inc. The nearly 2,000-square-foot store had an estimated cost of $180,000, according to city building permits. The custard shop is designed with wood and brick, a new look that resembles a corporate-owned Kansas City store.
Andy’s spokesman Stevie Stryker said 700-750 customers visited the store on opening day.
Connected to Watkins Elementary School is a new storm shelter now under construction.
