A Colorado transplant is bringing a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., fitness franchise to Springfield.

Chris Abbott, who moved to the Queen City in April from the Denver area, is targeting a February opening at Brentwood Center South, 2862 S. Glenstone Ave., for his first Orangetheory Fitness franchise. Lease terms with Jared Enterprises were undisclosed.

“I needed something to do and I’ve always been passionate about fitness,” said Abbott, who was laid off from an engineering job in September. “I started researching health and fitness franchises.”

Orangetheory, which focuses on strength, power and endurance training through group classes, met his needs. The centers have 60-minute sessions broken into intervals, with heart-rate monitors showcasing information for customers.

“It’s an amazing workout,” he said. “I was like, ‘How do I get involved?’”

Abbott was pointed to Springfield after discovering the Colorado market was sold out. In the Denver area, he said around 25 of the Orangetheory Fitness centers are up and running. The company has more than 400 franchises in 38 states and seven countries.

The 3,000-square-foot Glenstone Avenue center would employ eight-12 employees and include such equipment as treadmills, rowing machines and free weights. Abbott also plans to open a second Orangetheory Fitness franchise in Springfield but has not identified a site. Ideally, he said the second location would open by late summer next year.

Abbott declined to disclose initial fees and ongoing royalties. An article on FranchiseTimes.com estimates a total investment between $327,600 and $634,100, including a $39,500 initial franchise fee and royalties of 6 percent.

Orangetheory ranked No. 60 on the this year’s fast-growth Inc. 5000 list. The company posted three-year revenue growth of 4,308 percent to $47.1 million last year, according to Inc.com.
