Brown Derby on South Campbell shutters

Posted online
Brown Derby Stores Inc.’s retail operation at 3543 S. Campbell Ave. closed last week, marking the liquor chain’s second closure this year.

“It was just a management decision,” Brown Derby co-owner Ron Junge said of the store closure on South Campbell Avenue.

A downtown store at 200 N. Grant Ave. shut down several months prior. Junge declined to say whether the closures were due to low sales.

Junge said the two stores employed a total of six to eight full- and part-time employees, all of whom are still with the company and now are working at other locations. He added the company has not yet decided if it will sell the buildings or renovate them for future purposes.

Near Don Wessel Honda, the roughly 2,000-square-foot South Campbell Avenue location, owned by South Campbell LLC, has a 2016 taxable appraised value of $478,800, according to Greene County assessor records. The 1,512-square-foot North Grant Avenue store owned by Nouvelle Realty LLC has a taxable appraised value of $167,000.

With this year’s closures, the Brown Derby chain operates 15 area retail stores, according to Springfield Business Journal online research.
