Brewery boom continues with 7th business on the way

Posted online
Two friends who met in college have teamed up to start what could become Springfield’s seventh brewery.

Charley Norton and Keith Davis are in the capital-raising phase of moving their Prehistoric Brewing Co. LLC out of Norton’s garage and into a new southeast Springfield taproom.

The business partners are seeking 5,000 square feet of space for a bar and brewery they’re targeting to open within a year. Norton said Prehistoric Brewing is offering 999 shares, representing about 49 percent of their company, in an effort to raise $650,000.

Norton said he and Davis had the idea just before Mother’s Brewing Co. launched in 2011, but waited to see if Mother’s was successful before getting serious about their ambition. Prehistoric Brewing Co. was incorporated in November 2014, according to Missouri secretary of state records.

“We’ve been doing our research, doing our recipes,” Norton said. “And we’re to the point right now where we’re ready to go and we’re just looking for investors.”

The brewery’s offerings will include an India pale ale, a blonde ale, an Irish red and a chocolate-milk stout, he said.

“Out of all of our friends and family and investors that we’ve had meetings with already, they really always want more of that chocolate-milk stout,” Norton said.

Prehistoric Brewing would join established Springfield breweries Mother’s Brewing Co., Springfield Brewing Co., White River Brewing Co. and Lost Signal Brewing Co. Two others are in the works: 4 by 4 Brewing Co. LLC plans to open by September near Sequiota Park, and Tie & Timber Beer Co. is targeting an early 2018 opening in the Rountree neighborhood.
