In east Springfield next week, Cape Girardeau-based Plaza Tire Service plans to open the 61st store in the regional chain.

The privately held company last year bought property at 2867 E. Sunshine St., and crews are finishing renovations in preparation for the planned opening Thursday or Friday, said Plaza Tire Marketing Manager Brian McMillan. He was unaware of Plaza Tire’s investment for the store.

“Springfield is a growing area and looked like it had a good potential to be a good fit for us,” he said this morning from his Cape Girardeau office.

Located next door to the newly opened Ruby’s Market and on the same block as 2-year-old JBC Tire and Service Center, Plaza Tire is one of three companies working on new tire stores in Springfield. The 900-store Discount Tire chain in December opened at 3670 S. Glenstone Ave., and RNR Wheels & Tire is constructing a store at 5640 S. Campbell Ave. RNR also operates a shop on North Glenstone.

McMillan said Plaza Tire was aware of the plans by other tire shops.

“Competition is always a factor,” he said. “We look at markets to see if we feel there is unmet potential and an area for us to fit in and grow and serve a need. We felt like that was the case in Springfield.”

Plaza Tire operates 45 stores in Missouri, and the rest are scattered across Arkansas, Illinois and Kentucky. Owned by brothers Mark and Scott Rhodes, whose father founded the company in 1963, Plaza Tire buys tires direct from manufacturers. McMillan said among its 15 tire brands, the top sellers are Michelin, Bridgestone, Falken and Nokian.

He said the management team is set in Springfield, and store manager Barron Rice is hiring mechanics and tire technicians to round out the staff of eight-10 employees.

Working with walk-ins and commercial accounts, McMillan said other services include oil changes, brake work and alignments.

According to Greene County assessor records, Plaza Tire’s nearly 1 acre property had a $507,800 taxable appraised value in 2016, when it was owned by Humble Properties LLC.
