After four years, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is bringing back the greeter position to the front of its stores.
Starting in the summer, the company will position 9,000 people in the role.
The company cited positive customer feedback in bringing back the job, which dates back to the 1980s. Company founder Sam Walton implemented a store associate's idea that a familiar face at the entrance would give shoppers the impression of a friendly, neighborhood business. It also can act as a deterrent to shoplifters.
In 2012, greeters were moved to other positions to tackle new tasks.
