Theresa May: London attacker was British-born

Posted online
United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May said the suspect in the terror attack on London was British-born and known to security officers.

"He was a peripheral figure. The case is historic – he was not part of the current intelligence picture," she said, adding that there was "no prior intelligence of his intent – or of the plot."

She said the suspect is thought to have been inspired by Islamist ideology. Investigators think the attacker acted alone, though eight people have been detained related to the incident. The attacker's name has not been released.

On Wednesday, the suspect rammed a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before attempting to storm the Houses of Parliament, was shot dead at the scene. He then fatally stabbed a police officer on the grounds of Parliament before police killed him.

Including the attacker, the death toll was four. Another 40 were injured.
