Johnson & Johnson to pay $55M in talcum powder case

Johnson & Johnson was ordered by a U.S. jury yesterday to pay $55 million to a woman who sued the company over its talcum powder products for feminine hygiene allegedly causing her to develop ovarian cancer.

The verdict represents the second straight trail loss for Johnson & Johnson, which faces some 1,200 lawsuits related to its talcum powder products and their alleged cancer risks.

The decision yesterday, which the company plans to appeal, was delivered in Missouri state court. Gloria Ristesund was awarded $5 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages.
