Hitchhiker robot beheaded in Philadelphia

Posted online
The City of Brotherly Love was less than gracious to a hitchhiking robot. In fact, someone there murdered him.

CNN reports, hitchBOT, the cheerful robot that had made cross-country trips through Canada, the Netherlands and Germany, had intended to travel across the United States, as well. Instead, it survived roughly 300 miles on the mean streets of the United States before being beheaded in Philadelphia.

"Unfortunately, hitchBOT was vandalized overnight in Philadelphia; sometimes bad things happen to good robots,” the hitchBOT website reads.

Originally created by a group of Canadian students from McMaster and Ryerson universities, the robot was intended as a social experiment to “test human psychology when confronted with technological novelty.”

During its travel, hitchBOT visited Fenway Stadium, sat in the cockpit of an AirCanda plane and met Santa Claus.

People could follow along though social media, especially Twitter, where @hitchBOT tweeted its final thoughts: “My trip must come to an end for now, but my love for humans will never fade. Thanks friends.”

There is no word on whether hitchBOT will be rebuilt.
