Blunt’s Vietnam-era deferments become an issue in Senate race

Posted online
Sen. Roy Blunt’s claims about his Vietnam-era draft record have emerged as an issue in his re-election campaign against Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, a Democrat.

The Kansas City Star reports Blunt received three draft deferments while he was a college student in the late 1960s.

“Anytime anybody ever asked me about that, I would have said I had student deferments and was then included in the first year of the lottery,” Blunt said in a news conference with reporters.

According to The Star, when asked directly if he received deferments in February 2015, his office did not disclose them.
