MSU breaks school record with nearly $25M in grants

Posted online
Missouri State University received $24.7 million in grants and contracts during fiscal 2016, a school record.

The total for the year ended June 30 beats the previous record of $22.4 million set in fiscal 2008. The university also received $15.5 million in federal funds during fiscal 2016, the most in school history, according to a news release.

“Faculty and staff from across all areas of the university complete incredible and unique projects due in part to the external funding they receive,” said Erin Parrish, MSU’s director of research administration, in the release. “We continued to see growth in the number of educational programs funded and we are encouraged by the increase in funding coming in internationally.”

Fiscal 2016 donations included:
    •    U.S. Department of Education funds totaling $1.2 million supporting activities to improve student achievement, especially for those with disabilities;
    •    a cooperative agreement worth $900,000 with the Department of Defense funding nanoscale engineering technologies;
    •    $549,411 in U.S. Department of Agriculture money to help address food security through improvements in meat goat production and marketing and outreach efforts; and
    •    a Community Foundation of the Ozarks award of $260,000 supporting The Northwest Project, designed to help families in Zone 1 overcome poverty;

Roughly 49 percent of the awards were education focused, followed by service at 27 percent, research at 16 percent, facilities and infrastructure at 7 percent, and equipment at 1 percent.
