No. 15 Hammons Tower construction

Posted online
After breaking ground in April 1985, Springfield developer John Q. Hammons completed Hammons Tower, a 22-story office building located at the corner of St. Louis Street and Sherman Avenue, just north of the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center, in 1987.

According to previous Springfield Business Journal reports, Hammons acquired the property where the tower sits 16 years before Hammons Tower plans were finalized, and the site once was considered a possible location for a performing arts center.

The $15 million structure, with 130,000 square feet, included more than 22,000 square feet of mezzanine-style retail space on the ground floor, and The Tower Club, a private dining establishment, remains on the top two floors.

Hammons Tower stands at 270 feet tall, beating the city’s previous tallest structure by 18 feet.
