Former senator, astronaut John Glenn dies at 95

The first man to orbit the Earth has died. 

John Glenn, a former NASA astronaut and U.S. Senator died Dec. 8. He was 95.

CNN reports, Glenn was hospitalized more than a week ago, but his illness was not disclosed. 

The spaceman was born in the small eastern Ohio town of Cambridge on July 18, 1921, and was fascinated with flight at an early age. He joined the Marine Corps in early 1943 and flew 149 combat missions in World War II and the Korean War. Later in life, Glenn won in a U.S. Senate seat in 1974, beginning a 24-year career representing Ohio on Capitol Hill.

Following Glenn’s death, NASA – @NASA – tweeted: “We are saddened by the loss of Sen. John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth. A true American hero. Godspeed, John Glenn. Ad astra.”
