Can Congress defund Planned Parenthood?

Posted online
A U.S. Senate bill filed this week seeks to pull federal funding from Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest provider of abortions.

The move, filed by Iowa Republican Joni Ernst, follows the release of a series of undercover videos by a pro-life group attacking Planned Parenthood’s handling of fetal tissue. CBS News reports the bill language stipulates the funds would be redirected to other entities that provide women's health services, including community health centers and hospitals.

At issue is some $528.4 million to Planned Parenthood through government health services grants and reimbursements. According to CBS, Planned Parenthood reported revenue of $1.3 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014.

The measure is scheduled for a vote next week. Meanwhile, a fourth video was released by the Center for Medical Progress, according to CNN.
