Report on startup creation puts Greene County in top 5 in state

Posted online

Greene County landed in the top five counties in the state for startup creation, according to a “Show Me Jobs” report on startup economic impact released this month by MOSourceLink.

The report finds startups were spurred by the pandemic and created 81% of all new jobs in the state. There were 18,234 startup firms in 2022, a surge from the 15,934 in 2019, according to a news release.

“Startups are job creators in every corner of the state, and ‘Show Me Jobs’ shows their effect on our economy,” said Michael Carmona, network builder for MOSourceLink, in the release.

The top five counties for startup creation, in order, are St. Louis County, Jackson County, St. Louis City, Greene County and Saint Charles County. New tech firms were highlighted generating 1,297 jobs in 2021 and the tech firms start at nearly double the state’s average wage.

Health care and social assistance, including individual and family health services, had the most startups with 8,789 in 2022.

The study used data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages for Missouri and only included employers with 20 or less employees at the time of first hire.

Kansas-City based MoSourceLink is a nonprofit supporting entrepreneurs and businesses across the state.
